Henry McMaster: South Carolina's Longest-Serving Governor and His Vision for the Future

Henry McMaster is the current Governor of South Carolina. He has been serving in this role since January 24, 2017, and his current term is set to end on January 13, 2027. McMaster is a member of the Republican Party and succeeded former Governor Nikki Haley, who was confirmed as the U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations.

Recently, McMaster delivered his annual State of the State address on January 29, 2025. In his speech, he emphasized his vision for the state, including a focus on economic development, education, and public safety. He highlighted his wish list for the state lawmakers, which includes a further reduction in the state’s income tax rate, raising the minimum salary for South Carolina teachers to at least $50,000, and ensuring that all public schools have a school resource officer.

McMaster also made headlines recently for his push to promote nuclear power in South Carolina, aiming to "usher in a nuclear power renaissance". Additionally, he set a record for being the longest-serving governor in the state's history.

In terms of his background, McMaster graduated with an A.B. in history from the University of South Carolina in 1969 and received his J.D. from the USC School of Law in 1973.
